Saturday, May 27, 2017 – Flower Mandala Workshop

IMG_2421-for headerHow to make a “Flower Mandala in Photoshop CC”.

Saturday, May 27 9:30am-12:30pm – Lakewood Ranch Town Hall

Free to members

Morag Reid and Mindy Towns have been tinkering with how to make flower mandalas in Photoshop for a couple weeks now. If you follow either of them on Facebook you might have seen some of their posts showing their progress. Her and Mindy both worked out how to make them on their own and have come up with two very different ways to create them. Some of their fellow club members have shown interest in learning how they are done.  Because we had to cancel our club gear sale they decided to use the space to hold a free workshop for our club members.

Each person attending will need to bring a bouquet of flowers. They can be from your yard, the grocery store or a florist. Everyone can start our using their own flowers at first but after everyone gets the hang of it we think they will want to share flowers with each other to create more interesting arrangements with a larger variety of colors and textures.

Everyone will also need to bring a laptop computer and use Photoshop CC. The tools needed are not available in Lightroom, Elements or old versions of Photoshop. So please don’t sign up if you are not using a current version of Photoshop. You will also need to bring your camera. You won’t need a long lens. You will be standing over your arrangements as they are laying on the floor on a piece of black velvet. Morag and I have some black velvet but if you have a piece of your own you are welcome to bring it.

They will walk you through all the steps together as a group. Each person will also go home with typed out instructions to use to practice more at home.

If you are interested please email Mindy Towns at mindysp@hotmail.com

We will probably need to limit to number to 20 people because space will be limited, please email right away to insure your spot.

Please join professional photographer Mike Matthews on his unique and exciting workshop on Saturday, April 1st . You will have the opportunity to photograph 15-20 different species of exotic reptiles and amphibians such as the red eyed tree frog, brightly colored poison dart frogs, and numerous lizards and snakes along with some beautiful still lifes.  All animals will be set up in natural settings in a controlled environment with live plants, flowers, leaves and bark to produce some of the most stunning photographs that would be hard to duplicate even in the wild. You may recognize Mike’s tree frogs from the many award winning FCCC photos that were taken at his workshops.

This will be the last time Mike will be doing these type workshops in this area. After the April workshop he and his wife will be moving back to our home town of Louisville Ky to help with her aging parents. They will miss southwest Florida, and hope some of you will join him for this final and exciting workshop. He has promised  it will be the best one yet.

Recommended equipment list for this workshop are:

  1. Macro lens from 50mm, 100mm up to 180mm will work great.
  2. Ring Flash, Ray Flash or a macro Twin Flash work well.
  3. Speed light flashes, (one that fit in the hot shoe of your camera)     can work well if used with some sort of a diffuser, such as a Gary Fong, or Rough light bender.
  4. Extra batteries for flash.
  5. Extension tubes are optional for the longer lens if you do not have a macro lens.
  6. Tripods are NOT needed for this workshop.
  7.  lensrentals.com is a good source for renting equipment.

Mike also has a pretty extensive list of gear that he is willing to loan out to participants while they are in the workshop.  For use with hot shoe speed light flashes; 5 Gary Fong diffusers for any type of speed light flash, 1 Ray Flash that will fit most speed lights, 5 Light Benders by Rouge that will fit most speed flashes.  One Canon ring flash, 1 Canon 580 Speed Flash, 1 Canon MPE65 super macro lens and 1 set of Canon extension tubes.

The workshop will be held at the LWR Courtyard Marriott located at 8305 Tourist Center Drive, just across the road from the UTC Mall on University. There will be 2 separate sessions, one from 9:00am-12:00pm and the other from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Each workshop session will be limited to no more than 15 per session. The cost will be $150.00 to our club members until June 16th when Mike speaks at our monthly meeting. After that he will open any available spots up to the general public for $199.00.  If you would like to register early please send your name, address, phone number, email and if your prefer the morning session or the afternoon session, along with a check for $150.00 made out to Mike Matthews Photography to: LWRDPC, Attention: Mindy,  P.O. Box 110273, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34211. You may also register at the special events table at any regular monthly meeting. If you have any questions about the workshop please email Mindy Towns at mindysp@hotmail.com. You may reserve your place on the list via email but it will not be confirmed until payment has been received. Space is very limited and expected to fill quickly.
