Peek-A-Hoo by Susan Piper

Peek-A-Hoo by Susan Piper

Club member, Susan Piper won first place in the BIRDS, BUGS & CRITTERS category in the Marie Selby Annual Photography Contest. Susan says:

I was at Selby for a walk-a-round and spotted a bunch of photographers crammed into the little tower in the children area.  They were all watching the owlet and mom.  She had built a nest in the large stag horn fern on one of the banyan trees.  That particular day the owlet was just a few days from fledgling and had left the nest walking/flying up and down the trunk of the tree.  The shot was during one of his “rests” when he wasn’t exercising his little wings.  I returned a few days later but both baby and mom were gone and they haven’t returned in the past two years.
Congratulations Susan. A well deserved win.

CAMERA USA 2016: National Photography Exhibition and Award – Margo Cook

Margo Cook - For Meya
I would like to thank the Von Liebig Art Center, Naples, FL and the Exhibition Jurors – Zora Carrier, Executive Director, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts; Britt Salvesen, Department Head and Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography, and the Department Head of Curator of Prints and Drawings, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Eric Strachan, Freelance Photographer for selecting my photograph to be part of this exhibition.  Also would like to thank each of you for your continued love and support and most of all, God for giving me the talent.
A bit about the exhibition/contest –
All photographers residing in the USA were invited to submit one photograph taken in the USA after January 1, 2012 for Camera USA 2016:  National Photography Exhibition and Award.  Only 50 photographs were chosen to be included.   I am very pleased to announce “For Meya was chosen and will be included in this exhibition.

“FOR MEYA” was created for my daughter-in-law, Meya, who passed away (2.15.14) after a 15 month battle with esophageal cancer.  My step-son, Mark posted an online memorial in her honor. Decided to do a photo floral arrangement as an everlasting tribute.  Chose three tulips to represent the family of Mark, Meya and their son Ben.  I removed a petal from each exposing the true heart of the flower representing their love for one another. Then I placed the three petals to touch each other representing that even though they’re apart, they will always truly be together.  The color pink was chosen for its meaning of compassion and nurturing love which represented who Meya was.

An award of $5,000 will be given for one photograph and will be announced at the opening reception/presentation scheduled for June.  My fingers are crossed for this one!  But I’m already feeling like a winner as was juried into this show last year and now this year.   What an honor and a blessing being one of the 50 and having such prestigious jurors view and select my work.
